This series began in the summer of 2019 during an artist residency at the Mountain Lake Biological Station of the University of Virginia, outside of Blacksburg, VA. The Artlab residency is designed to foster an exchange between artists and scientists as each enjoys the remote wilderness location of the station abutting the Jefferson National Forest and a section of the Appalachian Trail. Each day while hiking, I was fascinated by the variety of lichen thriving in that region. Their somewhat primitive structures captured my imagination and became the impetus for a series that would extend over the following two years and result in the completion of sixty works.

This adorable cabin was my home for two weeks during the residency! To learn more about the Artlab residency click on the image.
