The Protists is a series that dates back to 2013 and was inspired by the 19th century scientist and artist, Ernst Haekel. Protists are a group of diverse unicellular organisms that often share morphological characteristics with plants and animals. In typical fashion, I was not interested in copying or illustrating actual exiting organisms. Instead, I was interested in creating my own imagined versions. My initial series of eighteen, nine inch by nine inch protists was conceived as a grid of drawings presented akin to a periodic table of elements. My idea was to develop a catalog of fundamental structures. For more on Ernst Haekel, click on the image.
